Mather Meadow Art Auction

October 19, 2002

On the evening of October 19, 2002, the Land Trust of Darien held it’s first ever fundraiser to culminate the purchase of an important piece of historic property, Mather Meadows. It was a grand culmination. It reflected the heart and soul of the many professionals, neighbors and friends of the Darien Land Trust who collaborated toward the success of the most ambitious acquisition in its history. What could have simply been parcels of land labeled only plat survey number 109 & 62, section SE & SW in the town of Darien valued at approximately 3.8 million dollars, became a focus of stewardship, protection and creativity.

As the momentum of the capital campaign reached its crescendo that evening, the best of our community came forward. The artists, who donated their talents toward the auction, reflected the larger story, as over the past months they gathered in small and large groups to paint “en plein air”. The work of many echoes and reflects the connections we have made both with one another and on behalf of this beautiful piece of land.

“Impressions of Mather Meadows” art auction was a resounding success raising over $200,000. The evening precisely reflected the inspired creativity, a spirit of community involvement, enduring friendships, and the intangible price of hard work with a tangible and glorious result. The best of us from the community along with the Trustees of the Darien Land Trust are linked to the best of the work that was represented at the Darien Community Association that evening to eventually make this land acquisition possible.

We continue to thank you.
