Olson Woods Lake:  In April, alewives begin their journey.

This month pregnant alewives were brought by the CT DEP to the DLT's Olson Woods lake. The fish will spawn here and then travel down the Noroton River to LIS and out into the Atlantic Ocean. In three to four years time they will return once more to complete their cycle of life.

The DLT is sponsoring a fish ladder underneath I-95 at Holly Pond so the fish will once again be able to reach their home destination.

This past Monday and Tuesday, ChrisFilmer, Den Frelinghuysen and Walter Goedkoop gave special tours of Dunlap Woods to first graders on a field trip from Ox Ridge School. Here are a few glimpses of what a walk around Dunlap lake and through the woods offers youngsters and oldsters.

Waterbury Field Purchased on December 12

On behalf of the trustees of the Darien Land Trust, I would like to thank the community for their support of the recent acquisition of Waterbury Field on Hollow Tree Ridge Road.

In a challenging economic environment, the generosity of so many of you enabled us to place this historic property under conservation, where it will remain protected open space for the benefit of our community forever.

The effort began more than a year ago with the extraordinary vision and generosity of the Joslin family, owners of the property for more than 40 years. Their desire to preserve it and willingness to offer it well below its market value are a gift both to the Land Trust and to all of Darien.

In addition to the hundreds of individual donors whose support made the purchase of Waterbury Field possible, there are several other groups whose contributions enabled the project's success.

The Town of Darien directed $25,000 towards the purchase, again partnering with the Darien Land Trust towards our mutual goal of protecting open space in the community.

The artists of the Holly Pond Painters and Fairfield County Plein Air Painters donated the fruits of their talents with works depicting numerous Land Trust properties. These were auctioned to great success at our Annual Meeting, with a portion of the proceeds supporting the acquisition.

The Waterbury Field Committee, comprised of both Darien Land Trust board and community members, worked tirelessly throughout the campaign and we are so grateful for their efforts.

At the closing with the Joslins in December, all of us expressed deep appreciation for the many generosities that achieved this legacy for Darien.

With thanks,

Kaye Rabin
President, Darien Land Trust and the Board of Trustees
